Forestry Road Elan Valley
Project: Elan valley forest road upgrade and visitor centre car park re-surface for Tilhill. Work completed in July and August 2021 on time and within budget.
Location: Rhayader, Powys, Wales
The objective of the works was to upgrade the current forest road to create suitable access for timber haulage. We had previously been on site last year and scraped off the vegetation and let the road dry out. We then had a meeting with Tilhill Forest manager and helped design the spec required and identified quarry locations etc.
Due to the sensitive nature of this site being so close to the Elan valley reservoirs, diffuse pollution control was a priority. We put in place measures to control any water run off. Water monitoring points were identified before work started.
We then moved in to site and began by opening up the quarry. Due to the location of the quarry and steep terrain, quarried material had to be carried and stockpiled at another location to be crushed.
The next step was to crush the material to the spec required. Two sizes of material were specified by the client to suit there needs. New culverts were installed and the road and car park were re-surfaced with crushed material, graded and rolled .
